AuburnJames Winery was born in 2005 with the first crushing of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Raywood Vineyard in Napa Valley and a handshake between Matthew Ospeck and winemaker James Frost. These two men share a passion for craft winemaking and are committed to a process that, for the most part, is carried out by hand. Together, they aim to produce small quantities of Bordeaux-style Napa Valley wines specifically designed for the membership of the AuburnJames wine club.

Several expansions now see the winery on the beautiful Auburn Estate at 1001 Silverado Trail South in St. Helena, nestled between the Napa River and the Napa Valley Reserve.

AuburnJames wines begin in the spring of each growing season when Jim & Matt walk through the vineyards to discuss what each would like to achieve for club membership for that vintage. The plan is then written in a pencil, and Mother Nature makes the changes she deems necessary for the vintage. When harvesting, the fruit is carefully selected from each vineyard. Our relationships with independent growers across the Napa Valley and the North Coast allow AuburnJames to enjoy the best fruit that many of the AVAs have to offer. From great fruit and Jim’s artistry, AuburnJames has been able to produce award-winning wines year after year.

Wine Making

At AuburnJames, they produce small quantities of artisan wines from California. Most of the processing is done by hand under the meticulous care of Jim Frost, their winemaker. There are many elements that determine the quality of a wine, and the utmost care is taken to ensure that every step of the winemaking process is carried out to the highest possible standard. From vineyard care to fruit selection and careful hand sorting, our goal is to deliver a very high quality product while at the same time trying to maximize what a particular AVA, vintage and varietal has to offer.

French Oaks are used for 100 per cent of their barrels of aged wine, while Jim manages the ratio of new, second-filled and neutral barrels that allow the AuburnJames signature to be delivered to their released wines.

AuburnJames Winery in St. Helena, California, is home to the entire family-run operation. It is in the Auburn Estate that every vintage of AuburnJames wine is handmade. Typically, each harvest is carried out in the early morning hours so that the fruit is still cool from the nocturnal breeze. When Jim decides it’s time, relatively small fruit blocks from each vineyard are harvested and processed by those (and you know who you are) that can best be described as a fabric woven together from the hearts and hands of many friends and family. Crush is an AuburnJames event. It’s a memory-filled snapshot in time that they can relive and enjoy 2-1/2 years later at release and again every passing year when they open the bottles that remain in the cellar.
