The San Ramon Valley Museum is dedicated to the preservation, presentation and celebration of the history and heritage of the San Ramon Valley. Housed in the beautifully restored 1891 Southern Pacific Depot in Danville on Railroad Avenue, the museum’s collections and exhibitions reflect the cultures and societies of the early settlers, the environment and the landscapes of the valley.
Discover Valley ‘s unique history in an informative permanent exhibition featuring a wealth of objects, artifacts, a historic narrative frieze and a photographic display. The museum also offers visitors guided tours to explore the Alamo Cemetery and the Old Town of Danville, as well as a range of educational programs, workshops and school children’s tours.
The Valley ‘s past is part of a permanent exhibition that includes artifacts, a historic narrative frieze and pictures of historic buildings. The Museum collects , stores and protects artifacts from the Valley of San Ramon. The Museum Store offers visitors exciting gifts and remembrances.
In addition to a permanent exhibition on Valley History, the Museum is sponsoring a number of revolving exhibits and guided tours, including the Alamo Cemetery and the Old Town of Danville.
School kids are served with special Indian Life programs for fourth graders in the fall and the Tassajara One-Room School program for third graders in the spring. Classrooms are invited to take a tour of the various exhibitions.
Each fall, the San Ramon Valley Museum offers an Indian Life program to fourth graders who come to the museum to learn about the California Indians, the first people to settle the area thousands of years ago. It is a field trip tailored to the 4th grade standard for history and social science.
Fourth Graders, whose history and social studies focus on the state of California, learn how these early people lived in the mountains, river valleys, deserts and coasts, adapted to their physical environment and cultivated natural resources. At the museum, students have the opportunity to hear the creation of accounts, to see artifacts from prehistoric times, to pound acorns, and to play Indian games. Although the Indian Life program focuses on the fourth grade curriculum, the program accommodates and welcomes older students and adult groups who are interested in learning about California Indians.
Every spring, third graders from all over the San Ramon Valley have the opportunity to participate in a program of living history at the restored One Room School in the Tassajara Valley. The school marms and school masters are conducting an authentic 1888 school day. The school is located on 1650 Finley Road.
In a program designed by Mistress and former teacher Joan Kurtz, students use slates, learn to cipher, recite from the McGuffey Reader, and play games of the nineteenth century. They dress up in period clothes, tie their horses to the stable, and eat farm lunches.
