Art Classes

Alla Prima Painting

Learn how to use still life as your subject to paint. Beginners and intermediate painters are welcome to join them in exploring oil and acrylic painting in the ‘alla prima’ style. Alla prima (Italian for the first attempt) is a way of painting directly, a brush stroke, to finish a painting in one or two sessions. Working with still life, they’re going through the steps to make luminous paintings. Weekly demonstration and discussion. Beginners and returnees are welcome.

Color & Design For Painters

Composition, color mixing, quality of light, orchestrating mood as applied to fine artist or illustrator painting will be discussed in this class. Students should operate on a medium of choice. The teacher will supply the painting material for the first class meeting. However, on the first day, bring a sketchbook and drawing material to make notes and conceptual studies. All levels are welcome from the beginning to the advanced. More advanced students are going to work more independently.

Sunrise to Sunset Plein Air workshop

Observe and document the changing light on the delta by doing numerous small paintings during the day while enjoying the historic Antioch Rivertown District and its attractions; the El Campanil Theatre, antique shops and restaurants.

Suggested tools, portable faucets, about a dozen small painting panels or canvases, painting supplies (paints, brushes, solvents, pallet and pallet knife, rags or paper towels, trash bags) Something to hold your wet paintings in while working in oil like a pochade box or pizza box, a sketchbook for sketching when the light is too dark or fleeting. Also, you may want to bring sunscreen, drink water and have lunch.

A Painterly Approach To Drawing

Focus on seeing values, shapes and edges; nature, proportion, space, form and perspective will be covered in this class. All levels are welcome from the beginning to the advanced. 18′′ x 24′′ newsprint cover, drawing board (big enough for drawing pads and broad clips to hold), soft vine or willow charcoal, medium and soft charcoal pencils, blades and sandpaper to sharpen charcoal pencils, chamois, kneaded eraser and sketchbook.

You Can Draw!

They love newcomers and middlemen. Did you know that ‘special creative talent’ is a myth? This intensive survey course will teach you how to see, think and draw the methods used by the greatest artists. Topics involve the use of basic points , lines and planes, composition and design, 3-dimensional space, light and shadow values, perspective and human figure.
