Shiva Murugan Temple | 1803 2nd St, Concord, CA 94519
Shiva Murugan Temple in Concord, CA honors the Hindu God of destruction. The temple was built by the Sri Lankan community residing in Contra Costa County. The temple’s exterior is decorated with sculptures and stained glass windows that depict scenes from Hindu mythology. Within the interior of the temple are statues worshiped as Gods, including one of Shiva Murugan who is depicted with a crown on his head, seated on a golden throne flanked by two white bulls.
It was established on the principles of Saiva Siddhanta and is known as the Palaniswami Sivan Temple, which offers pujas to murtis of Ganesha, Muruga, and Shiva. It rapidly grew in popularity among the ever-growing Hindu population, some of whom personally knew YogaSwami, a Sri Lankan saint and direct disciple of Ramana Maharshi.
In 1988, the temple was relocated to a larger location in Concord, CA, to better accommodate the Hindu community. The site was chosen due to availability and because it had previously been a place of worship.
The site contains the temple proper, a social hall in the basement, a separate building that serves as an office and classroom, and a private home for priests. The temple has, to this day, imported three priests from India to conduct the regular prayers. The first several years were spent largely on maintaining and keeping a consistent religious schedule. The board of directors continues to search for options to improve Temple services to the Hindu community by adding facilities such as building extension and cultural and spiritual activities.
