Quick History
The Seunen people, an Ohlone/Costanoan group who built their homes near creeks, once inhabited the lands now occupied by the City of San Ramon. They were taken by Mission San José for use as grazing land around 1797. They were part of José Mara Amador’s Rancho San Ramon land grant in 1834.
Amador named San Ramón (Spanish for “Saint Raymond”) after a Native American vaquero who tended mission sheep on the land, rather than a real saint. Amador added the “San” as is customary in Spain. Leo and Mary Jane Norris, the first permanent American settlers, purchased the northwest corner of Amador’s Rancho San Ramon in 1850, near the intersection of present-day Bollinger Canyon Road and Crow Canyon Road.
The tracks for the Southern Pacific Railroad’s San Ramon Branch Line were laid down and completed in 1891. The line ran from San Ramon to Avon, an unincorporated area east of Martinez, where it connected with the Oakland/Stockton Line. Southern Pacific extended the line south to Radum on February 7, 1909. (near Pleasanton). Passenger service was discontinued in 1934. Contra Costa County had obtained the railroad right-of-way by 1986, and the Iron Horse Regional Trail was built along its route.
Geography
Almost everybody in the city can see Mount Diablo, which flanks the city to the northeast. At the top of Bollinger Canyon, in San Ramon’s far northwest, is the Las Trampas Regional Wilderness. Approximately halfway between Interstate 680 and the Alameda County line, the smaller Bishop Ranch Regional Preserve crosses San Ramon’s western border.
The Diablo Range’s undulating hills and the San Ramon Valley’s flatter basin make up San Ramon’s diversified terrain. However, a large portion of the land surrounding the city’s border regions remains undeveloped and is covered by grasslands and oak tree orchards. The city is primarily urban and residential with numerous new housing complexes. The grass is golden in the dry months, but it turns green in the winter and spring due to precipitation.
