Buchanan Park is one of Pittsburgh’s largest and oldest community parks and covers an area of 16 acres. The Sullenberger Swim Center, a Community Center, and Bocce Courts are located there. Next to the Community Centre, there are two large picnic areas with natural shade. — picnic area has a capacity of 100 people, stainless steel sinks, food preparation tables, and wide BBQ pits, these areas can be rented out. Three smaller picnic areas with large BBQ pits are also available and are covered by shade structures. These areas are also available for rent and are situated next to the Community Center, each with a capacity of 50 people. Buchanan Park also offers 18 other picnic sites with picnic tables and BBQ pits spread throughout the park, many offer ample shade from mature trees.
In the center of the park, there is a wide pond with fountains; many visitors enjoy feeding the ducks or watching the sunshine in the family of turtles. Buchanan Park hosts two play areas, one tot lot with baby swings for ages 2-5 and one bigger playground with regular swings for ages 5-12. Other amenities at Buchanan Park include large turf play areas, two horseshoe pits, toilets, and a snack shack adjacent to the swimming pool which is open during summer months. Buchanan Park is located along Kirker Creek, and there is plenty of wildlife in the park and the trails that follow the bed of the creek.
The beautiful bocce ball court, restrooms, and more covered picnic tables and BBQ grills. This area can be requested for reservations. If you drive into the parking area this is where you find the best place to park rather than on the street. Once you park you can stroll over to the pond and feed the ducks. There is a pathway circling the pond. If you’re lucky on the day you come out you may see one or two or even more of the resident turtles! You may catch a glimpse of them sunning themselves on a log. This park is a dog- friendly but please pick up after your pooch. Nobody likes to step on poop!
If you follow the pathway up the hill along with the community pool (which is closed for repairs), you’ll come across the horseshoe pits. You have to bring your own ‘shoes’, they have 3 sets of stakes waiting for someone to bring their horseshoes and start a game. A few more tables there as well.
The pool has been a staple of the Pittsburg community since the ’80s. Sadly, it’s empty and closed for repairs. It’s a happening place when open. Has a snack bar, kiddie pool, and plenty of lawn to layout on. Showers and restrooms as well.
This is definitely a great park, plenty of open flat space to play a game of soccer or a small game of baseball. Beautiful trees and plants to look at. The park plays host to many different events throughout the year.
