ABOUT THE PARK

Dave Brubeck Park is located 8 acres north of Concord Boulevard between Mendocino Drive and Denkinger Lane, next to Concord High School.

Jazz pianist and Concord native Dave Brubeck died, at the age of 91, one day before his 92nd birthday.

Born in Concord on 6 Dec 1920, Brubeck became a popular jazz musician with pieces like “In Your Own Sweet Way” and “The Duke.” “Take Five,” a composition from his best-selling album “Time Out,” has become the standard of jazz and the best-selling jazz song ever.

Concord Mayor Dan Helix knew Brubeck and has fond memories of the musician visiting the city.

“I remember when Dave first performed with his group at the Concord Blvd. Park,” Helix said in an email to Concord Patch. “It was fantastic and he spoke about attending Mt. Diablo High School. He knew his teachers’ names.”

When Brubeck performed his famous ‘Take Five,’ the entire audience gave him a standing ovation, Helix remembers, adding that Brubeck performed at the Concord Pavilion too, always to a crowd of abilities.

“He will be with us forever because his music will never die,” said Helix.

The City of Concord has re-named the park “Dave Brubeck Memorial Park” on Concord Boulevard as a tribute to the jazz pioneer and his local roots.

Brubeck died of heart failure on Wednesday morning as he was on his way to “a regular treatment with his cardiologist,” at Norwalk Hospital, Norwalk, Conn., according to his long-time manager-producer-conductor Russell Gloyd and the Chicago Times reported.
