The town of Danville is located in the San Ramon Valley of Contra Costa County , California. It is one of the incorporated municipalities in California that uses “town” instead of “city” in its name. The population was 42,039 in the 2010 census. In 2020, Danville was named “California’s safest city.”

The Regional Iron Horse Trail runs through Danville. It was the first railroad to be converted into an 80-foot (24 m) wide corridor of bike and hiking trails as well as controlled intersections. Danville is situated in a narrow section of the San Ramon Valley with the Las Trampas Ridge to the west and the Diablo Range to the east. Interstate 680, which extends north and south along the valley, is the main route to and from the city. Camino Tassajara is the main road for east-west travel, the most important of which is to reach the eastern subdivisions far from the interstate. Camino Tassajara also provides access to the wealthy Blackhawk gated community.
